2009: the cave amphipod Niphargus

love hole friends

the home in our Karsgebiet cave amphipod is the cave animal Niphargus 2009!

How come? eV

The Association of German caves and karst researchers decided at its 2008 annual meeting, choose the first for the year 2009, a "cave animal of the year." This is to be noted in underground habitats in the public and authorities to the little-known zoological species.

The source of all life is water and so it is no surprise that many of our species that inhabit the ground water and the cave waters. One of these inhabitants of the cave amphipod Niphargus. It is a cancer type that includes a variety of styles. For this purpose, it is a key provision in the year 1942, but leaves many questions unanswered. Revised versions based on this provision currently using lists 15 different Species for Germany. The most common are Niphargus Aquilex, Niphargus schellenbergi and Niphargus puteanus. To date it has not been the many variations of cave amphipods to separate clearly morphologically or genetically. This fact led to the cave amphipod has been chosen as the "cave animal 2009. The Association of the German Association will cave and karst scientists to point out that just in the exploration of underground ecosystems and the species is occurring, there is still an enormous need for action.
